5. How did you attract/address your audience?

How did you attract/address your audience?

I tried to attract my audience by giving it a very over edited paranormal look at the beginning of the thriller to give the killer a very dominant and uneasy presence. This would help to entice the viewer very quickly with the first 10 seconds of the thriller as it suggests that something has happened before hand. This was picked up on by by a couple of people who I had view it. One person said about the opening was, "The opening scene really grabs you and gives you a uneasy feeling which is which is what you expect from a thriller and it also keeps you to watching on". This statement made by someone that viewed my thriller gives the impression that I wanted with the opening scene and also shows how I attracted my audience.

I also attracted the viewers slightly further along into the thriller by having two innocent characters close to where the crime was committed. This keeps the viewer enticed as they know that the characters are very close to discovering such a horror but the characters are totally oblivious. This makes the viewer want to carry on watching as they are interested into when the characters are going to discover or reveal the mystery. This whole concept is used by many other directors and writers as it keeps the audience engaged. Although this concept can be annoying as the viewer knows and is willing the characters to not go to that place, but this plays with the audiences feelings and emotions making it a perfect for a thriller.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Evaluation Question 4

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

I did some research into institutions and which one would be the most appropriate for distributing my thriller. I came across an institution called 'Brain damage films'. This institution specifically specialize in thriller films. This company would therefore be interested in my film as it ticks the boxes for what they distribute. The brain damage films distribution company (BDF) would distribute my film as it is a thriller and also close to a crime horror, making it even more suitable for their distribution company as they specialize in horror films. Distributing a film is extremely important especially one of little recognition such as my thriller. This would make Brain Damage Films therefore perfect as they have experience in the film distribution world and experience in distributing films of my genre.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Evaluation Question 2

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The first convention that I have used in my thriller opening sequence is the tension/suspense aspect that is found in thrillers. This tension/suspense is very present in the opening scene of my thriller where the 'killer' is displayed on the screen slowing zooming in with distorted, static T.V effects. This creates suspense as we don't really know what has happened, but we know it is not good due to the portrayal of the character with a knife in the opening. The zooming in on the character with the flickers of a knife all add to the suspense with the heightening of sound as the camera gets closer to the 'killer'.

Another way in which I followed the conventions of a thriller was through the lighting. This was done by selecting the perfect day in which I wanted to film outside with the clouds being drawn over in the sky and the sun not really being out at all. This in turn gave the dark and gloomy feel which I wanted for my thriller. The lighting combination with the thriller really helps to give the thriller like feel with the atmosphere of uncertainty which is represented by lighting. I also added slightly to the lighting by adding my own colour correction on top of the video. I added a colour correction onto the video with the saturation slightly turned up and a blue cool effect to give it that gloomy blue look.

Another way in which my thriller uses the conventions of a thriller is through the camera shots used. One that seems to be the most present for this point is when the camera is behind a black metal fence. The camera is looking between the bars on the fence, focusing on the two characters walking along the path in the street. This shot follows the conventions of a thriller as it again creates suspense as it gives the impression on someone is watching the two young boys as they go about their day. The camera looking through the fence suggests that they are not safe to the place that they are going. This creates suspense and tension and therefore follows the conventions of a thriller.

Ambient sound was used in my thriller to create tension and suspense. The ambient sound was very thriller like, in the sense it was very loud and abrupt making it fit the thriller conventions.  Ambient sound at beginning went well with the static sound effect that was also added. The ambient sound did not sound out of place and blended well with other sounds. Dramatic music also played a crucial part in my project. The music that was included in my project helped to represent a thriller as the music kept the feeling of suspense throughout the opening scene.  Ambient sound really helped to convey to my audience that they were watching a thriller not only from the visuals, but the sound which played hand in hand with the visuals.
